How to make your own latch hook pattern
- Choose a photo and crop it close. Pets, logos and bold shapes work best; small details are lost at rug scale.
- Pick your canvas (3.75 holes per inch is the standard rug canvas) and set the width in knots.
- Choose 6–12 colours. Each colour is a separate pile of yarn, so fewer colours keep the rug simpler and cheaper.
- Download the PDF chart with the colour key, yarn pieces and metres per colour, and the canvas size to buy.
- Transfer and hook: mark every 10th hole on the canvas with a fabric pen to match the bold lines on the chart, then hook row by row.
Rug size by canvas
| Knots across | 3 holes/in | 3.75 holes/in | 5 holes/in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 34 cm (13.3 in) | 27 cm (10.7 in) | 20 cm (8 in) |
| 60 | 51 cm (20 in) | 41 cm (16 in) | 30 cm (12 in) |
| 80 | 68 cm (26.7 in) | 54 cm (21.3 in) | 41 cm (16 in) |
| 120 | 102 cm (40 in) | 81 cm (32 in) | 61 cm (24 in) |
How much yarn?
Every knot uses one piece of yarn. At the usual 2.5 in (6.35 cm) cut length, 1,000 knots take about 64 m of yarn. The key shows the pieces and metres for each colour (plus 5%); change the piece length in the settings if you cut longer or shorter pile. A 60 × 60 knot cushion has 3,600 knots in total.
Tips
- Keep 2 in (5 cm) of bare canvas on every side to fold under and bind when you finish.
- Hook all knots in the same direction so the pile lies flat and the picture stays crisp.
- Pre-cut yarn packs are handy for the main colours; cut your own with a cardboard gauge for small amounts.
Frequently asked questions
How big will my rug be?
Each knot fills one canvas hole. On standard 3.75-count canvas, 60 knots across makes a rug about 41 cm (16 in) wide. The tool shows the size for the canvas you pick.
How much yarn do I need?
One piece per knot. The key lists the number of pieces of each colour and how many metres of yarn that is at your cut length (2.5 in by default), plus 5%.
What size canvas should I buy?
The pattern size plus 2 in (5 cm) on every side for hemming. The tool works it out for you.
How do I follow the chart?
Work from the bottom row up, one row at a time, matching each canvas hole to a square on the chart. Bold lines every 10 squares make counting easier.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The pattern is calculated in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
