How to make a rug tufting pattern from a photo
- Choose a photo, pet or logo with bold shapes. Tufted lines are thick, so simple designs come out best.
- Choose the rug size (longest side) and shape, and the number of yarn colours. 5–8 colours is typical.
- Pick the detail level. “Simple” keeps every area at least about 5 cm across and 18 mm wide at its narrowest; “Detailed” allows areas down to about 2.6 cm.
- Download the PDF (mirrored full-size outline over several sheets, plus the colour list) or the outline PNG to project.
Getting the design onto the tufting cloth
| Method | How | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Projector | Project the outline PNG onto the stretched cloth and trace it with a marker | Large rugs, quick setup |
| Printed pattern | Tape the PDF sheets together, lay them under or behind the cloth and trace | Small and medium rugs, no projector |
| Freehand with grid | Draw a grid on the cloth and copy the pattern square by square | Any size |
Because you tuft from the back, the pattern is mirrored by default, so text and logos read correctly on the finished rug.
Sizes and areas
- Rug sizes from 50 to 150 cm on the longest side; the other side follows the photo, or choose a round or square rug.
- The colour key gives the area of each colour in cm² and the stats the total in m². Tuft a 10 × 10 cm test square at your pile height, weigh the yarn used, and scale up by area to estimate how much yarn to buy.
- Leave at least 10 cm of cloth around the design for the frame, and plan backing cloth and glue for the whole rug area.
Tips
- Tuft outlines first, then fill each colour area in close, even rows.
- Cut pile shows details a little softer than loop pile; keep small areas for loop pile or skip them.
- For a gridded, knotted rug instead, try the latch hook pattern maker; for small hoop pieces, the punch needle pattern maker.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the tufting pattern mirrored?
A tufting gun is used from the back of the primary tufting cloth, and the pile forms the rug on the front. Drawing the mirrored design on the back makes the finished rug face the right way, which matters for letters and logos.
How do I get the design onto the cloth?
Print the full-size PDF, tape the sheets together and trace the lines onto the stretched cloth with a marker, or project the outline PNG onto the cloth and trace it. Both are mirrored when the box is ticked.
How detailed can a tufted rug be?
Tufting lines are thick, so tiny details disappear. The tool merges areas that are too small or narrow for your rug size; choose “Simple” for a first rug or a cut-pile gun.
How much yarn do I need?
The colour key shows the area of each colour. Yarn use depends on pile height, cut or loop pile and how close your rows are, so tuft a 10 × 10 cm test square, weigh the yarn used and multiply by the area.
