How to print a mirror image for an iron-on transfer

  1. Choose your transfer paper type: light fabric (mirrored) or dark fabric (not mirrored).
  2. Add your designs and type the width you want in cm or inches; add copies if you need several.
  3. Download the PDF and print it at 100% / “Actual size” on the coated side of the transfer paper.
  4. Cut along the trim lines, then iron or heat-press following the paper’s instructions.

Mirror or not?

TransferMirror?Why
Iron-on paper for light / white fabricYesPrinted side is pressed face down
Iron-on paper for dark fabricNoBacking is peeled and the print is pressed face up
Sublimation paperYesPrinted side faces the blank

Always follow your paper’s pack if it says otherwise. Text is the quickest check: in the PDF for light fabric it should read backwards.

Sizes that look right

PlacementWidthPaper
Chest logo / pocket7–10 cm (3–4 in)A4 / Letter, several per sheet
Baby or child T-shirt front15–20 cm (6–8 in)A4 / Letter
Adult T-shirt front25–30 cm (10–12 in)A3 / Tabloid
Tote bag18–25 cm (7–10 in)A4 / Letter or A3

The DPI shown under each design tells you if the picture has enough pixels: 150 or more looks good on fabric. Designing mugs or tumblers? Use the sublimation version.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to mirror the image for iron-on transfers?

For transfer paper made for light or white fabric, yes: the printed side is pressed face down onto the fabric, so the picture must be printed mirrored. Paper for dark fabric is peeled and pressed face up, so it is not mirrored. Always check the instructions on your paper’s pack.

Why doesn’t my printer’s mirror option work?

Many printer drivers don’t offer it, or offer it only for some paper types. Mirroring the picture here works on any printer. Make sure the printer’s own mirror setting is off, or the picture flips back.

How big should a T-shirt design be?

As a rough guide: a chest logo 7–10 cm (3–4 in) wide, a child’s T-shirt front 15–20 cm (6–8 in), an adult front 25–30 cm (10–12 in), which needs A3 or Tabloid paper. A4 and Letter allow up to about 19.8 / 20.4 cm wide.

Why are there trim lines?

Light-fabric transfer paper transfers a clear film everywhere it touches the fabric, so cut close to the design (the lines are 3 mm out) to avoid a visible edge.
